Reinvention: It’s a word that gets used a lot in the music world, and to put it politely, it’s not always justified. But when it comes to Mountain Heart and their first album in five years, no other will do. Following the release of 2010’s That Just Happened, the bluegrass-born quintet changed virtually everything but their commitment to making deeply authentic yet brilliantly crafted music. And now, with their self-produced [title], the new Mountain Heart is showing how compelling that kind of renewal can be.
Just how much has changed? Start with the fact that not a single founding member remains, and that the group welcomed its final arrival, violinist Molly Cherryholmes (of 5-time Grammy nominees Cherryholmes) just weeks before going into the studio. Yet the deeper transformation is apparent almost from the first notes of [opening track], as the consistent, polished sonic palette of the bluegrass band that used to be gives way to a kaleidoscope of sounds and textures—virtually all of them captured live in the studio—that place Mountain Heart on the cutting edge of free-ranging modern acoustic music. The same soulfulness that gave the band its name in the first place is still there, but voiced now through a unique blend that has room not just for their bluegrass legacy, but for the excitement of R&B, the introspection of singer/songwriter ballads, the irrepressible rhythms of funk and boogie woogie, the profound simplicity of classic country, the atmospherics of modern folk pop and more.
Indeed, to listen to [title] is to take a journey through a wide and well-chosen array of subjects and stories and roots music sounds, guided by a group who, despite their youth, have mastered the techniques and absorbed the emotional truths of them all. And it’s no accident that the handful of outside writers whose songs appear on the album, whether country sensation Chris Stapleton or the Bob Dylan of 50 years ago, includes those who have done the same. But though those contributions help to fill in the details, there’s no mistaking that it’s Mountain Heart’s voice that you’re listening to.
Metaphorically, instrumentally and on stage, that voice belongs to the entire band, but here it belongs more literally to Josh Shilling, writer and singer of most of the material. Barely into his 30s, he’s the group’s senior both in age and tenure. A sought-after co-writer who’s had cuts with similarly eclectic colleagues like the Infamous Stringdusters and Sierra Hull, he can dish out the brash defiance of “Miss Me When I’m Gone” and deliver the funky charm of a guy who’s just looking for a good time (“Blue Skies”), but also bring the introspection of “No One To Listen,” the gritty social realism of “Have You Heard About The Old Home Town” and the melancholy spirituality of “Hurting”—and do it all with singing and playing that are in equal measure virtuosic and heartfelt.
The same can be said about the rest of Mountain Heart—multi-instrumentalists Aaron Ramsey and Jeff Partin, Cherryholmes and sought-after guitar phenom Taylor—as well. Ramsey’s instrumental, “The Bad Grounds,” serves as a showcase for each individual—and, in the way that it organically moves from archetypal bluegrass rhythms to delicate textures and back again, for a collective ability to forge a clear identity from all their different influences, too. Sometimes, as in “Can’t Get Over You,” that means diving deep into a single groove, but often as not, a song like “She’ll Come Back To Me” will wind down a path where every turn brings something new into sight—and the fact that every member of the group can play more than one instrument means that the possibilities are almost limitless.

It’s easy enough to do by looking at where they’ve been and with whom they’ve shared the stage—the former range include top acoustic music venues like Merlefest, Grey Fox, Delfest and Sisters Folk Fest, while the latter include everyone from guitar legend Tony Rice (with whom they’ve performed entire sets) to Punch Brothers, Yonder Mountain String Band, Alison Krauss, and even Levon Helm and Merle Haggard.
