How often does the word ‘original’ get overused for bands? UK's Moulettes might actually deserve this accolade. Dedicated to touring, those who have had Moulette music brought to them can testify to this. This is whether Moulettes are doing a Rock show, An electronica show, a Folk show, an Acoustic Chamber Orchestra show or, more often than not, a brave wrestle of all of these into an exhilarating, unpredictable, intoxicating sonic bonanza.
The core of the band began playing together at school in Glastonbury with the festival on their doorstep. Led by Cellist & songwriter Hannah Moule; Ted Dwane (Mumford & sons), Rob Skipper (The Holloways), Ruth Skipper, Oli Moul and Georgina Leach (Seasick Steve, Ethan Johns) began a genre-defying process that many musicians have joined since; creating what is more like a collective than your average band. Think Frank Zappa ‘s extended band, meets Broken Social Scene, meets one of those incestuous Folk rock/ psych folk bands from the 60’s/70’s. Throw in the occasional American indie rock twists of Deerhoof & Tuneyards with Queen scale Vocal Harmonies & epic string arrangements & you get close to what the band has tried to present so far. At their experimental residencies in Denmark street in the late 00’s they became integral to the rise of folk-rock alongside indie and later mainstream acts. Moulettes played at the infamous Free Party’s in Eel pie islands run by the Mystery Jets and now continue to co-run The Rose Hill Arts space; Brighton’s best and truly independent venue.
Having spent 16 years on the fringes of Folk, Indie & Prog Rock, with chapters in London, Manchester, Bristol and Brighton the band has continued touring the U.K, Europe & Canada, playing Mainstages (Glastonbury, Montreal Jazz, Cropredy, Bestival, End of The Road, Cambridge Folk, Beautiful Days etc) & in BBC 6,2 &4 studios. They have pricked up the curious ears of a diverse audience both in & out of the industry. Noted for their creativity on the UK circuit they have shared the studio & stage with legends such as John Paul Jones, Seasick Steve, Nick Cave, Mick Jagger, Herbie Flowers (David Bowie, Lou Reed), God of Hellfire: ArthurBrown and members of Prog Rocking Gentle Giant & most recently were asked to partly arrange the latest acoustic album from PunkFolk Brightonian Legends, The Levellers. This was recorded at Abbey Road and produced by John Leckie (Radiohead, XTC).
Moulettes known contemporaries include Mumford & Sons, Band of Skulls, Bear’s Den, The Holloways, The Unthanks, Sarah Blasko, Mystery Jets, Noisettes, This is The Kit and more. The Artistic family tree goes on & on but more importantly so do the musical ideas & that is what has clearly been the priority for this band throughout its history. It is a history wrought with tragedies and triumphs, addiction casualties and parodies that don’t escape the Spinal Tap web. Nevertheless, the band continue to defy expectations and continue to win the hearts of fans all over the world. The next chapter sees the core trio of Hannah Moule (Cello, Synths, Vocals), Raevennan Husbandes (Guitar, Synths, Vocals) & Oli Moule (Drums, Synths, Guitar & Vocals) to tour for the first time in Australia, Japan, U.S & Mexico. Then its another world tour in support of their 5th Album; A Pentalogy LP of Rock, Electronic, Strings, Acapella and Brass/Woodwind versions of new songs. Expect Woman leadership, interesting guests, bespoke instruments (AlanMillerGuitars.co.uk), Acoustic & electric duelling, Progressive tendencies, concept records, Psychedelic stories, Environmental concern, surreal humour, multi-instrumental interplay & dedication to songcraft.
